Humble Beginnings of the Highland Creek Heritage Festival - Clancy Delbarre |
|
| On June 19, 2010, we will be celebrating the Highland Creek Heritage Festival for the 25th consecutive year. It dates back to the first celebration on Sept. 26, 1986 which featured on a reduced scale most of the activities planned for this year; | |

- A parade which started off at Meadowvale Public School , along Euclid Ave.,, and down Morrish Rd to the Village featured 4 bands; RCL 258, Lady Godiva Band (UofT),, Royal Air Cadets and Salvation Army plus a number of individual floats and vehicles including Jack Primrose (owner of the Hardware store where Remax reality building now stands) riding a vintage tractor ( see photo attached) - beergarden on the empty lot where the CIBC plaza is now located , - merchant’s sidewalk sale and fleamarket booths on Old Kingston Rd. |

-entertainment featuring a dunk tank, the Fun Strummers band, Crabgrass Band - Evening Dance on the street in front of the Highland Creek Plaza featuring the Durham Country Show band. Old Kingston Rd from Morrish to Kingston Rd. remained closed 9 am to midnight. The only disappointment arose from the purchase of screened Heritage Festival T-Shirts with the date ‘1986’, the majority of which remained unsold (now a collectors item?). The all day and evening activities were much enjoyed but the cool September weather persuaded organizers to select the month of June for the 1987 Festival and it has been celebrated in June every year since. Activities were focussed on the Highland Creek Village area with the exception of 2000 when it joined in a larger celebration , the Scarborough East 2000 festival, held in Adams park. The 1986 Festival was financed primarily by donations from Village merchants and businesses, which included a number who carry on business today; Chas. Bradley and Son ( Benj.Moore Paint), Feeney Auto Sales, Fleury Comery, Food Store, Saccoccio Weppler Architects, Grahams Travel, Kroll Auto Service, Mulhall’s Service Stn, Super X drugs now H.C. Pharmacy, Ted’s Restaurant, Shamrock Burger, and Three R Auto. |
