2004 REPORT
Our 19th annual Highland Creek Heritage Festival was
a great success again this year. The weather was almost
perfect for the day: sunny, cool, but a bit more wind than we'd have
liked. It was a wonderful day, but tinged with sadness for our
organizing committee. Just three days before the event
Georgina Murphy-Brett, a founder and active committee member, passed
away unexpectedly. Cheerful and sharp, Georgie was a mover and
shaker in the Highland Creek community. We miss her very
much.
Parade: "Toronto's BIGGEST Little
Parade" was an hour-long spectacle. We had 6 bands,
floats, and among our dignitaries this year was Mayor
David Miller. There were 1100 participants, in all, in the
procession. St. Joseph's Catholic Church, celebrating its
150th year, put on a great display. Kudos to parade organizer
Susan Fragis, and her team!

Crafters Market: (above) Our crafters market was
filled again this year.
|
Food: For the past few years our food
vendors have been getting more varied, and we hope to continue this
trend next year. Besides the usual hot dogs and
hamburgers, we had a beef barbeque, snow cones,
and other treats. The Legion "chip truck" was again
a huge hit.
|
| Entertainment: In the Village, we had a
line-up of fabulous entertainment that went all afternoon till about
5 p.m. The Commoners, Sweet Adelines, Renaissance Players
(below), two teen bands "4Ever Cool" and "Here Goes
Nothing", performances by parade bands and dancers...the list
goes on. In addition, a rock band sponsored by Re/Max kept the
east end entertained, and St. Joseph's Church had music most of the
afternoon.
|
Children's Activities: Air Bounce was
again wildly popular with the kids, as was the Sundance Petting Zoo
next to it. For the first time, the Toronto Zoo brought a
display of animal furs to feel. Face painting and personalized
buttons were available, as was a storyteller. New this year,
the Snickers Raptors Jam Van (below) had a constant line-up.

|
Beer Garden: Our 5th annual Karaoke Funfest went very well
again this year. The $500 prize in the Judged Contest seemed
to attract a lot of superb singers. Beer sales were
brisk! This year's winner was Scotty Newlands, with a close
second by Ron Polson (on the right)! Singers came from Scarborough's
Karaoke Pubs, some of which are listed on our web site.

Our Donors and Sponsors: We are grateful to all the
Volunteers, Sponsors, and Donors who made the festival possible.
Picture Gallery: Pictures from the 2004 Festival
will be published on this web page shortly.
2005 Festival: Next year's Festival (the 20th) will be on
Saturday, June 18, 2005. The organizing committee starts work
again in September to plan it. The annual general meeting will
be held Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at the Royal
Canadian Legion, Br. 258, 45 Lawson Road. If you are
interested and can commit some time, do not hesitate to give a
committee member a call. |
