REPORT ON 2003 FESTIVAL

The 2003 Highland Creek Heritage Festival on Saturday, June 14th was the best ever! When we get some photographs developed, we’ll post some here on the Web.  In the meantime, the Villager has posted some great parade pictures at  www.highlandcreekvillager.org/parade.htm ( (July 15/03:  started putting up the pic on our site: click here. )Our annual Dinner and Dance on Friday, June 20th starting 6 pm at the Legion, Branch 258 was a GREAT party!

The weather on Saturday started off cloudy, but finally broke into sunshine about 10:30 or so... and remained sunny all afternoon. Temperature was not hot, not cold...JUUST RIGHT!

Attendance this year was by far the best we’ve seen in years, if ever. If there were 7,500 people here last year, then there were at least 10,000 here this year! The Village stayed crowded through the afternoon, thanks to the entertainment that went on till about 3:30-4:00, and thanks also to a greatly expanded number of outdoor merchants. From the “beer count” we can say that the Karaoke Funfest almost doubled in attendance this year.

Our parade - Toronto’s BIGGEST Little Parade - went off without a hitch! We had 6 bands, and other music. Altogether, 60 or so entries. Organizer Karen Annandale and her whole team deserve accolades.

In the Karaoke Funfest, the first prize of $300.00 in the Judged Karaoke Contest went to Dexter Edwards of Markham, and the second prize of $150.00 went to advance entrant Altovise Ogilvie who sings at Allstars in Scarborough. Congratulations, Dexter and Altovise!  I am going to try to keep current the list of Karaoke Pubs over the next little while, updating the pictures now and again.

The ROM Mobile Dinosaur Display, sponsored by Steve Gilchrist, MPP was a big hit this year, as was Lynda Darby’s Sundance Meadows Children’s Farm. We had of course the ever-popular Air Bounce rides for the younger kids, as well. There were several face painting booths, including one sponsored by Steve Gilchrist, again, in conjunction with Enbridge.

There was a neat cut-out photo opportunity: you stick your heads in the slot, and get a picture taken as a 19th century settler!  Many people may have missed it;  we placed it down at the east end, and perhaps should have put it more centrally.

On Friday, June 13th, Breakfast Television host Jennifer Valentyne kindly came out in the early morning rain to give us some GREAT publicity! Thanks so much, Jennifer! What a trooper (and singer)!!  Jennifer is open to coming back next year, with maybe something different.

The Heritage Festival this year was made possible by numerous volunteers, sponsors, and donors. If you want to see a list click here.

If you were at Heritage Festival this year, and have some suggestions and feedback, don’t hesitate to e-mail us at gmcconnell@fleurcom.on.ca . We need your input!

If you missed Heritage Festival this year, then put it on your calendar for next year! It’ll be on Saturday, June 19, 2004 in the Village. We’ll strive to expand our attractions even more.
